Pump House/Tool House, with a chimney built of field stone, was formerly the sleeping quarters of Ober's workers. It now houses a freezer and an extra refrigerator, and it serves as a place for hand washing before meals. Although Ober took his drinking water directly from the lake, we now filter water from this location and carry it in gallon jugs to the kitchen. We have found that carrying water makes us aware of the volume of water we use in our daily lives, and it reminds us of the preciousness of water. It also limits the outflow of our gray water to manageable levels on this tiny granite island.
