Composting Toilet

The Clivus Multrum, a Swedish composting toilet using state-of-the-art compost management technology, was installed on Mallard island in 2002/03. It shares a wall with Winter House, but has its own ramped outdoor entrance, now becoming another beautiful spot on the island. This two-story composting system allows us to manage human waste without odor and with minimal caretaking chores, accessed from below and on the channel side. After five years, in the spring of 2009, caretakers will, for the first time, take compost out of the closed system.
